Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound's the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

stopping by woods on a snowy evening summary

The poet is riding on his horse when he passes through a forest. He is tempted to spend more time in the woods to witness the snowfall. He is aware that the owner of the place lives far away from there, so he won't come to know about his visit. The poet relaxes and enjoys the beauty of nature and the snowfall. He wants to spend more time and praise the beautiful surroundings

The poet says that he wants to spend some time in the forest to witness snowfall. But, he thinks that his horse might find it strange to stop in the forest in the middle of the journey without any reason. Moreover, there was no farmhouse nearby. It is a dark winter evening. Perhaps, the darkest evening of the year. Everything was covered with snow and the lake was frozen. He wanted to enjoy the beauty of nature. The poet says that the horse shakes his bells to ask his master if he had made a mistake by stopping

in the middle of the journey. Generally, the traveller stops near a farmhouse, so the horse was curious to know as why he had stopped near the woods. Moreover, the atmosphere was calm and composed. One could only hear the jingling of bells and the blowing of wind through trees and of the snowflakes falling on the trees.

The poet appreciates the surroundings by saying that the woods are lovely, dark and deep. He wants to spend more time in the peaceful forest. He loves the dark evening, snowfall and the forest. Though, he wants to stay there for sometime, but he has to fulfil many duties and responsibilities back home.

He can't escape from discharging his duties. He has made some promises which he has to keep against his own desires. He has to cover a long way before reaching his destination. There will be lots of temptations in life like this but he has to keep moving forward
